We are titling this "After the harvest". Varley has created this scene using one of his favourite motives of a flowing river in the foreground and a long used subject, amongst artists, of the harvest. Using a simple twilight mixed with the haze, caused by the cutting of the hay. A warm summers evening with a number of figures making their way home after a long days work. We have not seen any similar enamel work by Varley and would go so far as to say this is a unique panel.
