Reference | Shields was an English painter, illustrator and decorator who first saw Pre-Raphaelite paintings at the Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition in 1857 and was much impressed. Subsequently, he became a devoted friend of Madox Brown and Rossetti. His reputation was based upon his literary illustrations and religious murals. His watercolors and paintings were usually religious and in the style of the late work of Rossetti. Other Reference: Emestine Mills. The Life and Letters of Frederic James Shields. |
